Hanvon B10 BC10C Noisy Fan Mod - Part 2

Part 1 - http://hanvon-touchpad.blogspot.com/2010/09/hanvon-b10-bc10c-nosy-fan-mod.html

The Fan Noise one of my main hates with any Computer,
it was only after 4 weeks of use that i notice the fan wouldn't power back down,
i constantly checked the temp the fan comes on at 49c Low Speed and hits full power once it hits 61c,
as the Hanvon is factory set there isn't a option to adjust this,
there is a option in windows but not one in the bios which will help,
the problem i had was the fan would start as normal but when it is suppose to power down the fan wouldn't,

My only option was to changed the fan,
i search the net for part,
and then found out the fan which is currently in the unit isn't cheap at all,
so in the end decided to use diodes to mod the fan,

This turned out to be more of a simple mod and easier then i thought,
i used 2 diodes 1N4001,
removed the fan from the unit 3 screws,
cut the red wire from the fan make sure to cut closer to the actual socket /plug,
used a small piece of wire as a extension lead and soldered to the red wire,
then soldered the 2 diodes together trimming down the ends,
connected all wires together and soldered,
as i didn't have the correct heat shrink i choose to use insulation tape,
Out come,
i have used the unit for a few days since the fan mod,
and it runs like a dream,
on low temp you cant even hear the fan,
after about 2 hours of heavy use then the fan will comes on for about 5/10secs and then drop back down,
exactly as it should have been from the start,
have done 3hrs test while running a full HD film on loop and the fan ran as it should,
i'm really glad i ended up doing this mod,
another plus point the mic now also works better

  1. Do you solder the 2 diodes together in parallel or series?

  2. i tried this fan mod and i wouldnt say it runs like a dream, initially you hear no fan sound at low temp but once used for about 10mins the fan comes on and never goes back down, this is my observation but unless i did something wrong.

  3. I gave it a try yesterday,
    Bought 2 diodes from maplin,
First time around I soldered the diodes the wrong way so the fan wasn't even running,
Luckily I had the cover off so notice this straight away,
Then un-soldered and re-soldered and this worked,
The fan noise is reduce by 45% in my opinion,
Also I solder the diodes one next to the other...

  4. I think I must have spoken too early;-) It does indeed is a glaring difference from before the mod, as my friend came around with his b10 and been able to compare the difference, I can now say it might be running like a dream.

Another thing I've observed with using speedfan to monitor the temp, is that the temp are very much varied now moving up and down depending on how much stuff you doing and the fan following suit. Unlike without the mod you get the constant fan noise.

I really like how it runs now ... next I'm swapping is the wlan card for one with 802.11n

  5. " diode"
    ".....------------"
    "----|.........|..|---.."
    ".....------------"
    ""
    ""
"Plug red.wire diode diode red.wire Fan"
    "====|...............------------...........------------..................../----------\"
    "====|..------- ----|.........|..|---..----|.........|..|---..-----------..|............|"
    "====|...............------------...........------------....................\----------/"

dont know if this will keep the formating
    replace . with space
    anyway
    unplug fan
from plug cut red wire about halfway
solder 2 diodes in serial facing same way
then either solder them to the cut red wire
    or
solder 2 longer wires to the 2 half red wires
the diodes point towards the fan (the shiney end)
(i did, tons of space in there)
cover solder & diodes in electrical tape
    test
fan should come on (if not diodes around wrong way)

even a lousy solderer should be able to do this :)
just remove fan befor doing (dont have to undo anything else to access

  6. I can't see how this can work. All these diodes do is allow currant to flow one way. Wouldn't a resister be a better idea?

  7. wolfbite: 2015 and still going good :)
no noisey fan and running ubuntu.
might do the ssd mod I found somewhere :)
